In 1837 Friedrich Gerstäcker emigrated to America, where he led a varied and adventurous life as a sailor, stoker, hunter, farmer, cook, silversmith, lumberjack, manufacturer and hotelier. In 1843 Gerstäcker returned to Germany. From 1868 he lived in Dresden and Braunschweig. Gerstäcker died on May 31, 1872 in Braunschweig. Gerstäcker was a narrator of extraordinarily exciting and colorful adventure novels, which, however, always contain instructive moments in the description of the landscape and culture.
