1887-1917. It has been thirty years since I wrote my first book, \"Holidays on the Adriatic,\" as a young man. The little work was given a quiet life course; for the landscapes it deals with were not located on the great roads of the world, with the exception of Trieste, for example. It took twenty years for the first edition to come to an end, and when I drew the second in 1907 I was convinced that it would be the last at the same time and that the little work of young people would fall into the lap of mild oblivion. That would have been the natural course of a book\'s fate that was never intended to be effective.
