This is a relatively easy, enjoyable read, It is basically a UK travelogue, with occasional diversions into phantasy - there is a rather odd extended section about a third of the way through, where the writer imagines the conversations his various animals might be having behind his back: a sort of land-locked Wind in the Willows. Just as Stables doesn\'t tally long in any of the towns or rural settlements on his journey north, so the pace of the narrative is fairly brisk.
