قصة الكتاب :
Ulysses is a novel by Irish author James Joyce, published in 1922. The novel is written as a modern parallel to Homer’s Odyssey. It is considered a modernist novel that was first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from 1918 to 1920, before it was published in its entirety in 1922. The book has attracted controversy and scrutiny from the start. However, its style, structure and literary prose filled with puns, parodies and allusions along with its rich characterization and humour have made it one of the greatest literary works in history. Ulysses has earned itself a reputation for being difficult, although those who have indulged in comprehending it have admired its ability to be warm, welcoming and witty while offering a unique perspective on what it means to be human.
\r\nUlysses is a detailed account of the life of Leopold Bloom in Dublin on a particular day. It chronicles his appointments and various encounters in detail. All the action in Ulysses takes place on a single day. The three central characters in the story viz. Leopold Bloom, his wife Molly and Stephen Dedalus are meant to be parallels of the three central characters in Homer’s Odyssey. The events described in the novel are also meant to be a parallel account of Odysseus’s journey home after the Trojan war in Odyssey. While the allusions to the ancient classical work are interesting, there are times when it appears to merely have been created in order to offset the petty concerns that occupy most of Bloom’s and Stephen’s time, while also distracting them from their aims and ambitions. The book also builds up an intense and detailed version of Dublin, ridden with facts that are unknown to most or simply do not exist. This has been done deliberately in order to provide a backdrop to the real workings of the mind, the aspect in focus here.
\r\nThe main strength of the novel is in its depth of character portrayal and inherent humour. The book is best known, however, for its depiction of the inner monologue known as the stream-of-consciousness technique. As thoughts tend to be completely random, Joyce’s attempt to translate those effectively into prose led to the ushering in of a new style in writing fiction. By doing this, he exposed accurately how the moral rules that govern our lives are constantly at the mercy of chance encounters and the workings of the mind, unseen and unknown to many. At the time of first publication, the content was criticized for being obscene before it grabbed attention for its unique and brutally honest depiction of thoughts. Most scholars regard Ulysses as a masterwork of modernism despite the heavy criticism that greeted it from other quarters primarily for its explicit sexual content. The story has been adapted into theatre, film, television, music and prose along the years.\r\n
