قصة الكتاب :
To Kill A Mockingbird is a book that has remained popular and relatable to readers across six decades. First published by Harper Lee in 1960, it won a Pulitzer in the subsequent year, has been translated into more than 40 languages and has sold 30 million copies worldwide. It was later also made into an Academy Award-winning film. rn

rnThe story is set in the 1930s in the town of Maycomb, Alabama reeling under the Great Depression. It is narrated in the voice of Scout, the intelligent and introspective daughter of the novel’s hero lawyer, Atticus Finch. Finch insists that his children avoid being judgmental about things and people they do not know much about. He embodies and encourages sensitivity and justice. The entire novel mainly revolves around his attempt at defending Tom Robinson, a black resident of Maycomb, who is falsely accused with the rape of Mayella Ewell, a white woman. Atticus Finch does not flinch in his choice at defending Robinson, whose innocence he even almost manages to depict in clear detail in court, despite being harassed consistently by his own people. His attempts fail ultimately, and Tom ends up losing his life. There are several subplots in the story where we manage to get a glimpse of the nature of human behavior and the power of even one person doing it right, a lesson that Scout learns and which stays with her eventually. The book’s title is best explained by the line Finch tells his daughter, “Remember, it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” The mockingbird represents the idea of innocence in this tale which falls prey to evil. rn

rnThe universal themes of justice, human rights and fighting prejudice and racism highlighted in Lee’s masterpiece have resonated and continue to do so, with readers across the globe across ages. To Harper Lee, her book was just a simple story told from the heart. Today, it is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature. rn
