Orestes is an Ancient Greek play by Euripides that follows the events of Orestes after he had murdered his mother . Orestes was the son of Agamemnon, king of Mycenae or Argos, and his wife, Clytemnestra . Upon Agamemnon’s return from the Trojan War, Clytemnestra’s lover, Aegisthus, murdered Agamemnon . Orestes was not present at the time of his father’s murder . Clytemnestra was warned in a dream about her son’s vengeance . Years later, Orestes would return to Mycenae with the help of his friend Pylades and murder his mother and Aegisthus in revenge . He is the subject of several Ancient Greek plays and of various myths connected with his madness and purification, which retain obscure threads of much older ones .
