The Three Musketeers is a historical adventure novel written in 1844 by French author Alexandre Dumas . It is in the swashbuckler genre, which has heroic, chivalrous swordsmen who fight for justice . In this story D’Artagnan, a young Gascon, arrives in Paris and becomes involved in duels with each of the Three Musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis . The three soon become D’Artagnan’s best friends . This is the first and best known book in a series that follows the fortunes of the four friends .
