Crime and Punishment is a novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky . It was first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments during 1866 . Crime and Punishment perhaps the greatest of all psychological crime novels . Raskolnikov, a student, decides to kill a worthless person to help his impover- ished family, and to prove that he is exempt from moral law . After committing the crime, Raskolnikov is overtaken by panic and tormented by conscience as, one by one, his motives are proven false . Crime and Punishment focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in Saint Petersburg who formulates a plan to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her money .
